Toyota Worked with Stanford University to Build a Self-Drifting Supra
Yes, the Toyota Research Institute TRI, in collaboration with the Dynamic Design Lab of Stanford University, comes up with something big! A car that can drift on itself. Isn’t it surprising?
Well, as everyone who is updated with technology, knows that the automotive world is moving towards more safety pertaining solutions and making the cars safe to sit in. In the meanwhile, they haven’t forgotten about the “autonomous cars” factor.

Chris Gerdes, who is a professor at Stanford, mentioned that from the past times till now, he and his teams are having a closer look at the human race car drivers and are keen on developing the algorithms that could make the vehicles handle the most challenging circumstances and emergencies when driving.
Obviously, when drivers are racing, they face some situations where control is out of their hands. Mostly, accidents and disasters occur in those situations.
The idea is to develop algorithms and code them to make the car itself handle those situations to save crashes and accidents. It will not only save the precious lives of drivers but will save expensive cars from merciless crashes as well.
Observations from the Release
In the video shared by the TRI, we can see that the car is itself driving and drifting. Not only that, the driver is quite comfortable while sitting inside and taking out his hand, making the victory sign. This is an example of the safety that is ensured by modern technology introduced.
This was not simple, and in fact, this is the beginning of something extraordinary. In doing this, the Toyota Research Institute and Dynamic Design Lab performed proper observations on skilled racecar drivers when they were driving and drifting as data science and artificial intelligence have grown a lot.
We can develop a lot of data regarding the details of processes and phenomena and then program them into the computer to make them do things on their own.
In the same way, both TRI and Stanford gathered information, converted it into the appropriate form, developed algorithms on it, coded it, and produced the autonomous supra drift car.
